A Message from Our Founder

As a person living with Parkinson’s Disease, I’ve learned that exercise and socialization is as important to my well-being as it is taking my medication. With this being said, Power Over Parkinson’s, through its Parkinson’s Activity League (PAL), strives to support people with Parkinson’s by providing them with these opportunities to get out, move, and socialize with others who are battling the disease. In addition to our PAL events, Power Over Parkinson’s also sponsors educational conferences, as we believe having the most current information about the disease, as well as the current research, will aid people with Parkinson’s in both their care and outlook . Your participation in this event (player or sponsor) will help fund these programs – exercise and educational events alike – and enable us to continue to offer them free to participants and their care partners. Thank you for your consideration.

About Parkinson’s

Parkinson’s disease is a type of movement disorder that can affect the ability to perform common, daily activities. It is a chronic and progressive disease, meaning that the symptoms become worse over time. It is characterized by its most common of motor symptoms—tremors, stiffness or rigidity of the muscles, and slowness of movement – but also manifests in non-motor symptoms including sleep problems, digestive problems, anxiety, depression, and fatigue, among others. Although much research has been conducted, there is no known cure to this disease.

There are an estimated 1 million Americans living with Parkinson’s disease and more than 10 million people worldwide. Approximately 60,000 Americans are diagnosed with PD each year. Most people who develop the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease do so sometime after the age of 50, but Parkinson’s disease can affect younger persons as well. Approximately 10% of Parkinson’s diagnoses occur before age 50—these diagnoses are called Early Onset Parkinson’s disease.

Through its strategic partnership, Power Over Parkinson’s is proud to have VCU Health as a beneficiary of this event, too!
